ABOUT DAN SANTAT

Dan Is the illustrator of THE SECRET LIFE OF WILTER KITTY by Barbara Jean Hicks, CHICKEN DANCE by Tammi Sauer, the OTTO UNDERCOVER by Rhea Perlman, and OH NO (Or How My Science Project Destroyed the World) by Mac Barnett, which won the SIlver Medal for Best Illustrated Book from the Society of Illustrators. Dan’s first graphic novel, SIDEKICKS will be out this July. He is also the creator of Disney’s animated hit “The Replacements.” In addition, Dan graduated with honors from the Art Center, College of Design and he has been a commercial illustrator with a long list of clients that include the Wall Street Journal, Esquire, Time for Kids, the Village Voice, GQ Russia, Macy’s, Scholastic, Harpercollins, Simon and Schuster, Random House, Knopf Books, Dutton Books, Atheneum, Sterling Publishing, Hyperion Books, Walt Disney Animation, Macworld, Time Out, Official XBox Magazine, Infoworld, Skiing Magazine, Boy’s Life, Electronic Business, Activation, Disney Interactive, Pasadena Weekly, Advertising Age, Toyquest, SEGA, Primedia Business, Fishwrap, Folio Magazine. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This intensive art school course will help prepare artists aspiring to work in the publishing industry, including the most advanced illustrator who is either published or has yet to break into the business. Some topics covered will include painting techniques in traditional medium and digital, color theory, composition design, assembling the right portfolio tailored to children’s publishing, and marketing yourself to potential clients in the industry. The intensive will include demonstrations and hands-on activities.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT TO BRING TO CLASS

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

  • 1. Find an illustration in children’s publishing that you love – color or black and white. Copy it the best you can. Bring it in for discussion along with the original image you copied from.
  • 2. In addition, bring another drawing you’ve done in the style you wish to emulate.

ASSIGNMENT TO SEND
Email up to three of your finished portfolio pieces. Dan will choose one to be studied in class. Send the images to RegionalAdvisor@scbwi-az.org by no later than May 27th.

Registration for the Intensive is limited and will be processed on a first received basis. Don’t delay in reserving your space. Registration ends when spaces are filled. No refunds unless the event is cancelled by SCBWI AZ. SCBWI AZ reserves the right to cancel the event due to insufficient registrations. SCBWI is not responsible for non-received items.
