AASL Pre-Conference Cultural Tour: Art and Architecture in the American Southwest




AASL 18th National Conference Pre-Conference Cultural Tour
Art and Architecture in the American Southwest

This full-day tour will immerse attendees in art and architecture of the American Southwest.

The day starts with a 1.5-hour tour of Taliesin West, the beloved winter home and studio of innovative architect, writer, and educator Frank Lloyd Wright.

In the afternoon, guests will travel to the home of Mary Wong, a former school librarian in the Phoenix area. Guests will receive a boxed lunch, before setting out to view more than 100 illustrations in Mary’s home.

Tour participants will have the opportunity to meet five local illustratorsLynne Avril, Molly Idle, Wendy Watson, Mike Venezia, and Juana Martinez-Neal – and win their donated sketches, small art spots and drawings as door prizes. The illustrators will be available for Q/A sessions regarding their work and upcoming projects. Their books will also be available for purchase and autographing.

The Art of the Picture Book

Spend an afternoon with two award winning Picture Book Author/Illustrators: Chris Gall & Juana Martinez-Neal.

These talented and successful illustrators have made their mark in the picture book industry with unique style and expertise. One with a digital media, one with a more traditional approach, both with remarkable results. They will discuss their techniques, provide demonstrations in their chosen media and share their experience as working professionals in Children’s literature and beyond.

Attendees will also be able to sign up for a private 15-minute portfolio critique with Chris or Juana during the last hour of the day.

The event will take place at OneOhOne Gallery located at 101 West Main Street, in Downtown Mesa. On the SW corner of MacDonald and Main.
