Changing Hands’ Saturday Playdate

From Illustrating to Writing: How Two Illustrators Made the Transition into Writing

Pura Belpré Honoreé and creator of Stella Diaz Has Something to Say, Angela Dominguez, and Caldecott Honor winner and creator of Alma and How She Got Her Name, Juana Martinez-Neal, team up for an eye-opening discussion about their publishing careers.

Both Angela and Juana started writing after making their mark in children’s books by reinterpreting traditional fairy tales. They will share how they write from an illustrator’s perspective and how they include their personal lives in their work. Join this In Conversation brought by The Author Village.

In Conversation with Angela Dominguez and Juana Martinez will happen on Thursday, June 11th at 3pm EDT /5pm PDT.

Join us at Changing Hands Bookstore in Phoenix for a special storytime with the author and illustrator of Fry Bread.

Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story, was recently awarded the 2020 Robert F. Sibert Medal and the American Indian Youth Library Award Picture Book Honor. Told in lively and powerful verse by debut author Kevin Noble Maillard, Fry Bread is an evocative depiction of a modern Native American family, vibrantly illustrated by Pura Belpré Award winner and Caldecott Honoree Juana Martinez-Neal.
