Global Read Aloud 2020 – Intro

Hello everyone! I hope you all have been well. I’m posting again now that I’m the Picture Book Study for the Global Read Aloud 2020. Global Read Aloud is an amazing project created by Pernille Ripp. In the creator’s own words:

“The Global Read Aloud started in June of 2010 with one small idea; a book to connect the world.  And connect it did, spanning nearly 90 countries, five continents, and millions of students connected.  We grew together, we worked together, and we read together.”

This video is my intro to the event to the next six weeks of posts. On Sundays each week, I’ll have a post dedicate to the book of the week. Please post your questions about that title as comments on the post. Each Thursday, I’ll pick some questions and record a new video with my answers and post later that same day.

With that said, this week is all about Alma and How She Got Her Name and Alma y cómo obtuvo su hombre. Please post your questions below as comments. I’ll see you again later this week.

Thank you for participating in the #GRA20! Thank you for reading my books!

See you Thursday!

Children's book author and illustrator, mami of three, wife, sun aficionado, amateur singer and Margarita lover born in Lima, Peru and living in sunny AZ.

Hello! My students at Carol Stream School have these questions for you:
How long does it take to make a book?
    What is your favorite book?
Will you write more books about your life?
    What is your favorite food?
What type of person are you?
What inspired you to write Alma?

    Mrs. Cole's Class

    Our class had two questions:
    1. Why did you choose Alma as your main character and why did you want to write the book about Alma?
    2. Why did you choose to write the story with your family as characters?

    Grade 3/4 Genius Scholars

    OLA!

We are a group of genius scholars from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. As students, we loved reading your book Alma. We are looking forward to reading more of your books for the Global Read Aloud project. On week 6, we choose our own book to read. Which of your other books do you wish were included in the GRA? Which book would you recommend for us to read?

We have a number of wonders about your work. We love your illustrations. Our class used Alma to launch our second DEI (Drop Everything and Inquire) that asked us to research the meaning of our own names.

Here are our other questions for you.
What inspired your passion to illustrate and write?
Out of the books you have created, which is your favourite?
Why are the illustrations in Alma drawn in black, white, and shades of red?
Which is your favourite part of the Alma book?
After you wrote Alma, how did you feel about the end product?

We hope you have a marvelous rainbow day. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Thank you from Canada

Students at Forsyth Country Day School ask:
How many stories have you made?
What was it like growing up in another country?
    Do you have any kids?
    Are you married?
What’s your favorite book that you ever made?
    Thanks from North Carolina

My K-2 students have not had much time yet to think about their questions (not all have even heard the first book yet–I am a librarian and I meet with each class once per week), but here are two of our questions (both from second graders):
    1) Is the bird seen in most of the book a special or important bird to Alma? Would the family give their pets long meaningful names too?
    2) Why do you like your name?
    Thanks so much!
